Did you know that Music United is now an Affirming ministry of The United Church of Canada? At last year’s AGM held at Music Matters in Montreal, the vote to become Affirming was unanimous.

What does this mean for us as music leaders, members, and supporters of Music United? Hopefully, it means that as musicians, we actively celebrate the diversity of the Spirit’s expression in music, in song, and in our church lives. It means using and choosing inclusive language that reflects and respects all gender identities and sexualities, and honours all those who have lived on the margins, those with disabilities, those who are racialized or who have been hurt in the myriad ways in which society can oppress. It means advocating for fair employment practices in church music. It means having equity support persons at all of our gatherings and welcoming trans choir members, working with them to find their voice. Your comments on how Music United can be an Affirming ministry are requested. Ideas for workshops, articles, or projects are welcome. We’d also love to hear about some of your Affirming projects.
