Voices United Music Leaders Edition

Voices United Hymnbook in a pew

For years, the music leaders’ edition of Voices United has been out of print. Some of the most helpful material in that edition included the performance suggestions and the history of the music or text. Now, we are entering all that information into GatheringWorship.ca! You will be able to search a hymn and get access to everything that was printed in the margins in the music leaders’ edition.

For example, this tidbit from the music leaders’ edition about VU 18 “There’s a voice in the wilderness” is of interest for the United Church’s 100th anniversary: “This hymn commemorates the union in 1925 of the Canadian Congregational and Methodist churches with a large portion of the Canadian Presbyterian churches to form The United Church of Canada. The author, James Lewis Milligan, a journalist and a lay Methodist preacher, was the director of public relations for the uniting churches between 1922 and 1925. Henry Hugh Bancroft, organist and choirmaster of All Saints’ Cathedral (Anglican) in Edmonton, composed the setting for Milligan’s text for The Book of Common Praise (1938, Anglican).”
