Nancy Painter shares: “This is certainly not an original plot, but a different take on it. We used it at our Christmas Eve service. The staging can be flexible. Our church has a four-foot-wide creche that doubled as the ‘garage,’ but just a manger will be enough to set the scene. Casting is flexible, too. You can have Ray and Miriam and as few as two farmers or as many as you want. Mary can be a real person or imagined or the creche figure.”

Miriam: his wife
Farmers: two or more dressed in outdoor clothing suitable to your area and for a cold, windy night
Setting
- two chairs facing out and angled slightly toward each other
- a table between the chairs
- a jar or tin labelled “Vacation Fund” on the table
- a coat stand for Ray’s and Miriam’s coats
- a chest with blankets
- a large wooden creche or just a manger set up at floor level, in front of a raised stage
- a TV remote
- a jar or box for money
- All other props or furnishings are imaginary.
(Ray enters from stage left, mimes taking off his jacket and hanging it on a hook by the doorway. Miriam is watching TV, holding a remote control while looking out toward audience.)
